Packing for La Fortuna: The Essential Rainforest Checklist
Packing for the rainforest isn’t like packing for the beach. In La Fortuna, you can experience a bright sunny morning and a tropical downpour by lunch, followed by a humid, misty afternoon.
To help you enjoy every moment without being weighed down by a heavy suitcase, we’ve refined the ultimate “Beyond Arenal” packing strategy.
“There is no such thing as bad weather in the jungle, only bad gear.” — The Beyond Arenal Team
1. The Golden Rule: No Cotton
Cotton is your enemy in the rainforest. It absorbs moisture, stays wet for days, and becomes heavy.
- The Alternative: Look for moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics or lightweight merino wool. These dry quickly and keep you cool.
- Beyond Tip: Bring 2 more pairs of quick-dry socks than you think you need. Wet feet are the fastest way to ruin a hike.
2. Footwear: The Two-Pair System
You need a system, not just shoes.
-
Pair 1: Trail Shoes or Hiking Boots. They must have deep lugs (tread) for the volcanic mud and loose gravel of the 1968 trails.
-
Pair 2: Water Sandals (like Chacos or Tevas). Essential for the Peñas Blancas Safari Float, the waterfall, and the hot springs. Flip-flops will get sucked off by the mud instantly.
3. The Rain Layer
It’s called a “rain” forest for a reason. Even in the dry season (Dec-April), localized showers happen daily.
- The Gear: A high-quality, breathable rain shell or a durable poncho. Avoid heavy rubberized jackets; you’ll sweat more from the inside than the rain will wet you from the outside.
4. Electronics & Protection
Humidity is the silent killer of cameras and phones.
- Dry Bags: Invest in a small 5L or 10L dry bag for your boat tours and waterfall visits.
- Power Bank: Using GPS and taking 500 photos of sloths kills batteries fast.
5. Skin Protection: The “B” List
- Bug Spray: Look for Picaridin-based sprays if you want to avoid DEET. Apply especially around your ankles.
- Bio-Degradable Sunscreen: If you’re swimming in our pristine rivers and waterfalls, please use reef-safe/bio-degradable options to protect the ecosystem.
